1-Step Sparring List

General:

The instructor/examiner will determine which level of Traditional 1 step students will commence from: Basic, Advanced, or Model. Attacker and defender always start in parallel ready stance. However, if the attacker wishes to attack with a leg technique, they must step back with the attacking leg into L-stance forearm guarding block and adjust their distance. Defender stays in parallel ready stance.

Traditional Basic 1 Step – 4th Kup Students (Blue belt)

Attack: Use Obverse Punch in Walking stance attack (Right & Left)
Defence & Counter Attack: Use 3 step sparring defence and counter attack.

Traditional Basic 1 Step – 3rd Kup Students (Red Stripe)

Attack: Use Obverse Punch in Walking stance attack (Right & Left)
Defence: Use blocks from patterns
Counter: Any counter attack. Students should ensure that they finish in a stance

Traditional Advanced 1 Step – 1st & 2nd Kup (Red Belt & Black Stripe)

Attack: Use any Foot or Hand attack
Defence: Use blocks from patterns, body shifting and dodging is also allowed
Counter: Any counter attack. Students should ensure that they finish in a stance

Traditional Model 1 Step – 1st Kup Students (Black Stripe)

Attack: Use any Foot or Hand attack (once only from any side) performed slowly
Defence: Any block, body shifting and dodging followed by counter. The student can also incorporate locks, restraints or takedowns after the counter attack when performed in fast motion only

Note: Model 1 step is first performed in Slow motion and then repeated exactly the same in Fast motion with an optional extra counter, lock, restraint or takedown as a final move.

Traditional 1 Step Sparring for 1st Degree and above

Attacks: Any grab or hold
Defence: Any block or counter. The student can also incorporate locks, restraints and takedowns

Foot Sparring for 1st Degree and Above
Format: Kick attack, Foot block/check or dodge & kick counter
This form of sparring was developed from the ancient Korean art of “Taek Kyon” and Soo Bak Gi which mainly relied on foot techniques. The significance of this type of sparring is to promote the kicking techniques required in Taekwondo. Both Attack, Defence and Counter are performed with the foot. Hand techniques are not allowed to be used.
